Happy New Year: What is Truth?

Happy New Year! We thought you might find inspiration for 2010 with this poem. Click here for a printable version (pdf).

What is Truth?
by Swami Kriyananda

Truth is all-embracing.

Truth knows no barriers;
it is, therefore, always kind.

Truth fosters harmony, never disharmony;
unity, never disunity;
universal respect, never judgment or intolerance.

Truth is ever beneficial;
its rays heal, though they cauterize our imperfections.

Be wary of statements made in the name of truth, if they lack charity.

View skeptically such statements if they are self-serving.

Should anyone, moreover, claim unique possession of a truth,
turn apart, and gaze up into the vast heavens:

For truth is expansive;
its native land is Infinity.

Truth inspires joy in our souls
even if we, in our human littleness, fear its liberating rays.

Cutting some “comforts”, however, can be short-sighted. Not even considering the impact on employee morale, some cutbacks may actually cause the company to lose money—the opposite of the intended effect.

Consider the following true story. (more…)

“Indonesia has launched an interesting experiment to teach its young to be honest. It is opening a chain of honesty cafes where there will be no cashiers. Customers are expected to pick up whatever snack they want and drop the requisite money in an open plastic box. The idea is to make young Indonesians think hard about cheating and honesty.” –Mint, Quick Edit (17 Jun 09)

Often we may, perhaps unconsciously, associate the word “business” with “making money”, “self-interest”, and even “greed.” This belief may seem justified by the plethora of evidence streaming in from financial crimes around the world, perpetrated by top executives. The New York Times itself recently asked the question, “Is it time to retrain business schools?”

In response to the many scandals on Wall Street, Harvard students pursuing an M.B.A. (Master’s of Business Administration) are pledging to be honest in business, reports The New York Times. (more…)
